The age old saying goes: early bird gets the worm. Well, newsflash...we’re not all made equal. If your snooze button is working on over time this week and you’re over being cranky pants (all day, every day), you need to scroll this list and take notes on how you can add some zest to your morning routine.
Drink a glass of water as soon as you wake up. Then, drink another glass of water. This rehydrates your body, revs up your digestive system, and gets things flowing. You may notice positive changes like clearer skin and better digestion. Bonus points if you add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice or a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar or a pinch of paprika.
2. Leave Your Phone Alone
Do you sleep with your cell phone next to you and grab for it first thing when you wake? Do you check your email or phone right away, first thing in the morning? This is not a good habit. If you choose to resist the temptation to check your email or social network feed until at least an hour after waking up, you'll find that your mind is more clear, focused and happy.
3. Create an Intention For Your Self
Write yourself a physical note, or a digital note on your phone of something you’re going to focus on. Review this note mid-day. Daily intentions allow us to bring our focus back on ourselves and visually remind us of what to work on. Some ideas:
-I will not worry; Everything will be fine.
-Today, I will be present and pay attention
-I will ask for what I deserve.
4. Get Some...Fresh Air
Step outside and FILL your lungs with fresh air! Inhale. Exhale. Inhale. Exhale. Deep breathing in the morning is extremely vital to setting your body up for the rest of the day. TIP: This only takes 10 seconds but it also reminds you that you are alive and breathing. Even if it’s cold outside, it’s super important to wake up your senses.
5. Bust a move and shake your booty
You don’t necessarily have to do an intense workout before breakfast, but moving your body even a little is a great way to get the blood flowing and shake the body into wake-up mode. Simply doing a few stretches or picking up a skipping rope is a great option. Or turn on your favorite Zumba playlist and dance like no one is watching.
6. Gratitude is the Attitude
Write about one thing for which you have gratitude. This sets the stage for positivity throughout the day. If you are able to journal about two or three or five things, even better.
7. Smarten Up Your Breakfast Routine
TIP #1 Try prepping your breakfast the night before so you aren’t rushed in the morning. When you take time to eat a healthy breakfast, composed of the perfect ratio of protein to carbs to fats, this allows your body to burn “smart” fuel for the rest of the day. How you start your day nutritionally has an enormous impact on your mood, motivation, and speed for the rest of the day. TIP #2 Try adding some chia seeds/hemp hearts/millet flour to your next breakfast shake for a nutritionally charged breakfast!
8. Say Your Affirmations
Look into the mirror and say something positive to yourself. Some ideas:
